The formation of Devil’s Tower has many explanations. It was thought to have been formed by an explosive volcanic eruption. However, scientists and geologists have come to disagree on the exact process of how the tower was formed. One theory claims that it was formed by an enormous volcanic plug that was eroded through the sedimentary rock beds. The plug may have been created due to the buildup of pressure and may have exploded.
The tower is 110 miles north of Rapid City and is an easy day trip. It is located halfway between Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial. Although the area is remote, the Devils Tower KOA is just 25 feet from the National Monument.
